Kate Barald, PhD
Director of PREP
Kate has been the Director of the NIH and UM supported post-baccalaureate program, PREP, since 2009, after serving as Associate Director of PIBS for over a decade. She has been on the faculty of the University of Michigan for almost 40 years, and is currently Professor Emerita (Active) of Cell & Developmental Biology in the Medical School and Professor Emerita (Active) of Biomedical Engineering in the College of Engineering. She designed and has served as the course director of the University-wide Research Responsibility and Ethics training course, now called PIBS 503, for more than 20 years. She has devoted much of her career to promoting diversity in STEM disciplines at all levels. She has presented (pro bono) workshops on mentoring, negotiating job offers and achieving promotion and tenure world-wide for almost 40 years. She has helped more than 60 young scientists negotiate their first job offers in academics, industry and biotech.
