How to get the support you need


  • Review the maternity and parental leave documentation available on the U-M Human Resources website
  • Notify your faculty mentor/P.I. early in your planning. There are many arrangement that need to be made and it is better to get started early on
  • Contact your department HR representative. If you are unsure whom to contact in your department, you can call the Solution Center directly at (734) 647-5538

Maternity Leave (Childbirth)


  • Contact Work Connections to create a case file. This is required for all postdoctoral follows (regardless of funding source) in the Medical School requesting Maternal Leave
  • Ask your department HR representative to help create a case ticket with Michigan Medicine HR Solutions Center
  • Maternity Leave allows for up to six weeks of paid time off for physical recovery immediately following birth, taken as a single block of time
  • Birth mothers are eligible for Parental Leave (up to six weeks additional paid time off) after completing Maternity Leave, to be taken within the first year of childbirth.
  • All leaves are managed under the same case ticket through Michigan Medicine HR Solutions Center which will assist you through the time off

Parental Leave (Non Birth Parents)


  • Ask your department HR representative to help create a case ticket with Michigan Medicine HR Solutions Center
  • Parental Leave is up to six weeks of paid time off, intended to be taken as a single, continuous block of time
  • Departments may approve leave totaling up to six weeks, taken intermittently within the first year of the event

Important Details

 

  • Make sure that you enroll in benefits for your new addition to the family by navigating to Wolverine Access and selecting “Initiate Life Events”.
  • Keep in contact with your faculty mentor/P.I. and your department HR representative to communicate plans for return to work

Administrators


For Administrators helping with Solutions Center forms:

  • Postdocs are treated as Faculty (under “Customer Type”) due to similar time-keeping practices
  • The source of funding does not affect this policy
  • For birth mothers taking a combination of leaves, this single case will cover all of the leaves of absence
  • For “Step 3: Summary and Description”, select “Leave of Absence/FMLA” and “FMLA”
  • “Step 5: Customer’s Checklist” is an optional box
